Cyber-attacks continue to be one of the largest concerns for companies across the globe, causing huge financial losses and reputation damage. Across IBM’s set of IBM Z and Linux One products, the z/OS Secure Engineering Team is dedicated and skilled in the art of penetration testing. Our team’s mission is to find and drive resolution to all vulnerabilities prior to our clients experiencing the hardship of a cyber-attack.

In this role, you will gain valuable experience learning about the operating system and the tools we use, while working closely with a team of engineers and security SMEs who are focused on finding and managing security vulnerabilities across our products. Strong programming skills would be required along with an interest in operating systems and cybersecurity.

You will participate in many aspects of the software development lifecycle, such as design, code implementation, testing, and support. You will work to create software that is of high quality and meets our clients’ needs. You will also have the opportunity to become a contributor within Open Source communities across multiple disciplines.

As a Backend Developer Intern, you will:

• Knowledge working with client-server architectures, networking protocols, application development, and using databases.
• Create Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) that are clean, well-documented, and easy to use.
• Design and code servers, services, applications, and databases that are reusable, scalable, and meet critical architecture goals.
• Have an understanding of, or experience with, Agile development methodology.
• Create and configure Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Software as a Service (SaaS) applications. Design and implement large scale systems and Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) that enable continuous delivery.

Who You Are:

• We are currently looking for a computer science, computer engineering and/or cybersecurity major to work directly with the z/OS Secure Engineering team to creatively exercise the latest tools for penetration testing the IBM Z mainframe’s z/OS operating system.
• Highly motivated and have a passion for creating and supporting great products.
• Thrive on collaboration, working side by side with people of all backgrounds and disciplines, and you have very strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Great at solving problems, debugging, troubleshooting, designing, and implementing solutions to complex technical issues.
• Have a basic understanding of software development and programming languages.
• Have the ability to learn new skills quickly and use the skills efficiently.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

Must have basic knowledge in one or more of the following technology areas: C++, C, Java, Ruby, Python, Perl, SQL

• Knowledge working with servers, applications and databases
• Familiarity with APIs
• Basic knowledge of operating systems and how they work (i.e. Operating systems courses); Container technologies; Internet Services; and/or Managed Services

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

• Must have minimum of 3 months experience in one or more of the following technology areas: C++, C, Java, Ruby, Python, Perl, SQL
• Must have minimum of 3 months experience with APIs
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science
