This is an opportunity to join an established research group and to

develop your skills in a leading area of technology. You will work

on an EU funded project, developing software-based techniques that

can be utilised for monitoring and control in a range of applications,

for example in motor-vehicle engines. A good first degree in an

appropriate subject is required; a PhD in an appropriate field would

be an advantage.

You should have good programming and software development abilities,

some knowledge of neural networks or other intelligent techniques,

good laboratory, practical and measurement skills and good practical

problem-solving ability. The post is fixed-term until 31 December

2001 in accordance with the period of funding. Job sharers welcome.

Subject: Complex Adaptive Systems Masters Program

 

International Master's program in Complex Adaptive Systems

 

Chalmers University of Technology in Gvteborg, Sweden, is introducing a new

international Master's program in complex adaptive systems starting in

September 2000. The program will focus on

 

+ evolutionary computation: artificial life, genetic algorithms and genetic

programming

+ computational biology

+ dynamical systems

+ autonomous robots

+ simulations of complex systems in nature and society

 

The program runs for a year and a half, and consists of a full year of

courses followed by a Master's thesis. The entire program will be taught in

English. Applicants from all countries are welcomed. We have an ambition to

create a multidisciplinary mix of students, however, entry requirements

include basic courses in mathematics and computer science. Further details

There is no tuition charge for the program, but students are Expected to

cover their full living expenses themselves. A few scholarships may be

available from various foundations for students from certain countries.

METAHEURISTICS NETWORK: DOCTORAL AND POSTDOCTORAL POSITIONS AVAILABLE

 

The Metaheuristics Network, a three-year Research Network funded by the

European Commission within the Improving Human Potential Programme, will

start its activities on September 1st, 2000.

 

The goal of the Metaheuristics Network, which consists of the six

laboratories listed below, is to deepen the understanding of metaheuristics

so that they can be applied more effectively to the solution of important

practical combinatorial optimisation problems.

 

The following doctoral and post-doctoral research positions are expected to

become available (subject to funding):

 

IRIDIA, Universite' Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium (1 postdoc, 2 doctoral

students)

EINDHOVEN University of Technology, The Netherlands (1 doctoral student)

EUROBIOS, Paris, France (1 postdoc)

IDSIA, Manno, Switzerland (1 postdoc)

INTELLEKTIK, Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, Germany (1 postdoc or 2

doctoral students)

NAPIER University, Edinburgh, UK (possibly moving to South Bank University,

London, UK) (1 doctoral student)

 

The people we are looking for should either possess a PhD (postdoc

positions) or a degree that allows them to embark in a doctoral program

(doctoral student positions). In both cases, their area of competence

should be in at least one of the following disciplines: Computer Science,

Operations Research, Computational Intelligence. They should be experienced

programmers in procedural or object oriented programming languages and

should have knowledge of modern operating systems.

 

The right people will have a commitment to research and publication, and

possess good communication and presentation skills. The ability to work as

part of a team producing pre-defined deliverables to fixed deadlines is

essential.
